Accountability

"You either make yourself accountable or you will be made accountable by your circumstances"

From the Region 14 Community

Does anyone know the status of R14 Board of Education discussions regarding plans to enroll Waterbury students at Region 14?

Republican American 8/28/2019 - Gov. Lamont floats idea of student sharing between districts - Waterbury public schools "overcrowding" are now in the Governor's crosshairs and the targets are suburban school districts with declining student populations

The Atlantic - 8/1/2019 - The Whiter, Richer School District Right Next Door - The school district, in Waterbury, Connecticut, is touched by eight other districts, each one whiter, more affluent, and receiving more dollars than Waterbury itself.

Republican American 11/29/2018 - First Region 14 forum on enrollment study and master plan set for Tuesday - A 20-scenario master plan looking at the state and fate of Region 14 school facilities. This was a Region 14 BoE meeting so this is really happening in our district.

Republican American 3/12/2018 Waterbury mayor to towns: Do your schools want our kids? - City's schools overcrowded even as suburban enrollment drops.  It appears from the article that Mr. Butterly publicly indicated an interest in this idea but noted that decision rests with school officials.

Woodbury Patch 01/29/18 - Region 14's Declining School Enrollment Could Lead To Changes - Over a 10-year period student enrollment has declined by more than 500 students, officials reported.

How would this addition to our enrollment change or impact our school culture that is already in a fragile state? Will it improve our school rankings or just increase enrollment and justify more Region 14 administrative salaries and staffing levels?

Does the potential for the State to subsidize between $3,000 - $8,000 per out of district student cover the current $21,924 per student cost in R14 or does this help to lower the taxes in Bethlehem or Woodbury? Will the BoE answer these questions publicly or make decisions that impact our students and town in a vacuum?

Region 14 administrative staffing levels remain at an all time high in comparison to similar districts. Region 14 added a Director of Human Resources position in 2015 (for only 338 employees). Who was managing this function prior to this new position being added?

How was the candidate hired for the Director of HR position? Was this candidate subjected to a competitive hiring process? Did the selectee have any prior Human Resource experience in order to command such a high starting salary?

14forKids has confirmed the starting salary for the Director of Human Resources position was $149,603 and the selectee had little to no prior human resource training or administrative experience in this field.

2019 UPDATE - The Superintendent has publicly announced that the Director of Human Resources position was eliminated from the fiscal year 2020 budget.

As of 8/2019 - Former Human Resources Director has left R14 to pursue other opportunities.

Could the next new administrative staffing position be an Assistant Superintendent?

Can our small rural region really support such a densely populated administration and sustain their exorbitant salaries?

Is this bloated administration really adding value for students and improving student performance?

Have these staffing decisions squandered valuable resources and compromised the curriculum, ability to hire more Teachers, reduce class size and improve Region 14's overall failing CT  State performance ranking?

What is the administration doing to resolve two parent's complaints about racism in Region 14, voiced at a June 2019 BoE meeting?
